Since then, the contest has grown considerably and the standard of ringing has improved enormously.įor us it’s also a great opportunity to practise and improve our own standard of ringing, as well as experiencing the excitement of competing against the best bell ringing teams in the country.’ The competition was due to be hosted here in 2020 and we had the final once before in 1996. There’s an elite number of towers where they have very high standards of 12 bell ringing and they will be the teams featuring in Sheffield. Most village churches have between six and eight bells, but there are around 100 towers in the country that have 12. ‘It’s the FA Cup of bell ringing and to ring accurately on 12 bells is very demanding. He says the 12 Bells Contest is the biggest event in the calendar for the Sheffield bell team: Tower Secretary at Sheffield Cathedral, Simon Reading, and former Ringing Master for 28 years, first moved to Sheffield in 1978. Taking place on Saturday 24 June, the contest for the Taylor Trophy will see 10 teams taking part with members of the public able to enjoy the bells on the Cathedral forecourt where there will also be deckchairs and food vendors. This elite competition is being hosted by Sheffield Cathedral and brings together the best bell ringing teams from across the UK. The national 12 Bell Competition is coming to Sheffield this month and will see different bell ringing teams competing against each other.
