![]() That said, there is a trend just as you noted. Oh definitely, every viewer's gonna go in for slightly different things and that's not a problem, just personal preference. So it means something to me, while might Yang and Blake mean something personal to someone else? To a world-weary cynical bastard who's already seen tons of stories with the themes early Whiterose had to deal with, the partnership with more maturity and less drama was obviously more compelling, at least in my book. Initiation and Badge/Burden cement these initial impressions as we see Ruby and Weiss go through somewhat cliche highschool-level leadership/humility arcs, while Blake and Yang fall into an easy working relationship as each one picks up on the other's skill and experience. And Ruby, due to skipping two years of school and seemingly having underdeveloped social skills plus a black-and-white outlook on the world, lacks the hardness and cynicism commonly associated with "mature" characters. Obviously seeing her thaw out and overcome that is a big part of her character's draw, but the initial vibe was still that of a "prissy princess" which Port called her out on. Weiss' first impression was honestly very childlike - a tantrum-throwing spoiled brat from a sheltered background, focused on social status and confronting perceived affronts to her dignity. Blake makes sense due to her harsh backstory, and Yang was a single mother at the age of six or maybe younger while dealing with her own heartbreak of learning her mother didn't care for her (and then when the worst had passed and Tai came out of his shell, she ending up looking for clues about Raven in seedy bars while underage, which can't have been a pleasant experience.) They're the grownups, no-nonsense (when necessary) stable personalities who recognize each other's basic competence.
